A contest for the 'official spokeswoman' of the film series and for After Dark Films, was announced September 2006 on YouTube. Participants auditioned both online and in person at Los Angeles and New York locations, and were later flown to those cities to appear at the Fuse/Fangoria Chainsaw Awards, the Fangoria Radio Show with Dee Snider and Debbie Rochon, PlayMania and a short series of reality-style movies featured on YouTube. The four finalists were chieko13, msblackbetty, darkspidernyc, and Ysabella Brave[1]. Internet voting ended on November 9, 2006. Msblackbetty was named Miss HorrorFest 2006 on November 18, 2006.

After watching the first half of the films in this latest After Dark Horrorfest (read that round up here) you can damn well imagine I had just about written the whole thing off as a bloody sham. Then came Lake Mungo. A ghost story. From Australia. If you thought I didna’t have high hopes for Zombies of Mass Destruction you can take it under safe assumption that I wasn ’t holding out for much with this film. But damn was I surprised, and in a good way.

Folks, Ig’m not going to pull any punches. Lake Mungo shocked the hell out of me. This isnl’t just the best film of this series, I think I can safely say that ita’s the best film released under the After Dark banner, period. Forget Paranormal Activity and the popularized cinema verité stylings filmmakers seem to be flocking to. This is how you tell a ghost story! From the beginnning I really didnt’t know what to think of the film. It plays like a documentary and always stays true to that technique of storytelling. Dono’t expect cheap jump scares or moldy blue cheese children popping out of the woodwork to wreak havoc. Lake Mungo is a slow burner and a quiet film that works by engaging the audience in masterful storytelling.
