You can fashion your own folding knife from a few relatively simple parts if you have the right type of materials. This project uses a stainless steel alloy sheet for both the blade and the backing. The backing requires metal that will flex under mild pressure to allow the blade to pivot as it is opened, and then lock to hold the open blade in place. The metal side plates and the rods used for the pins are from brass stock that works easily yet resists corrosion. The pattern is designed for use as a beginner's project.
