These beautiful ebony bokkens (or ebony mokgum) are made in South Korea with Vietnamese ebony wood. The specific gravity of the ebony wood is greater than water. Given that they are the same size, the weight of ebony bokken is much greater than most ones made with other woods. It is a very challenging type of wood to work with because the wood is very hard to manipulate using conventional tools, and when the blade is shaped with a belt grinder, the powder is very stingy to eyes and nose and it's almost like breathing pepper. Ebony bokken is similar to Japanese katana which consists of a hard edge and softer body. The black layer of the wood is very hard while the brown layer is little bit softer. In a sense, these bokkens are similar to katana in that they are extremely tough but absorb shock very effectively. The wood has a very smooth finish. We do not use any protective coating on these bokken to preserve the natural smooth feel of the wood.
