A range of generic animals has been produced, including a turtle, pig, puppy, kitten, frog, and hippopotamus, but cartoon characters including: Garfield, Scooby-Doo, Looney Tunes, Shrek, The Simpsons, and SpongeBob have also been licensed. Additionally, there are Chia Pets depicting presidents, including Barack Obama.

Sad! The Obama Chia Pet AND #10's disrespectful comments! Sad and frightening! We can agree to disagree without being disrespectful. Of course, respect is not much of a value anymore. What did I expect! You know...freedom of speech and all. I guess with that in mind I could easily call the maker of the Obama Chia Pet and #10 ball sucking assholes and get away with it.

The Chia Obama, a Chia pet-style Obama sculpture on which people can cultivate a head of green hair, has been recalled from Walgreens’ and RiteAid stores throughout the US. The Chia Obama is a tiny bust of the 44th president that you water until a mini green ’fro covers his head. Some say the product is downright racist, while others say at the very least it’s in very bad taste. Still, others say people are getting just a little too touchy when it comes to feelings about the nation’s first African-American president.

This was a great stocking stuffer for our 24 year old. The nostalgia of getting a chia pet like he'd gotten so may years ago with a set of sea monkeys was sweet enough, but add that to the playful disagreements he and his dad have over politics, and he laughed so hard we were all in tears. Did I mention it is functional? Our daughter harvests the sprouts, or like she likes to put it, s"gives the prez a haircut.>" She uses the sprouts on sandwhiches, in salads or in an interesting shake she drinks a few times a week. And the best part - Obama is doing some direct good for our family ;)
