A funny thing happened the day the HP Blackbird 002 arrived in the Computer Shopper offices: A steady stream of people, not all of whom regularly express any interest in desktops (and not all of whom are on the editorial staff), filed into our testing lab to take a peek at one of the most unusual-looking computers we've seen in years. The consensus was unanimous: The Blackbird is a gaming machine unlike any other.
The first ground-up collaboration between HP and VoodooPC (which HP bought last year), the PC's full name is the HP Blackbird 002 with Voodoo DNA. Indeed, Voodoo's imprint is obvious on more than just the machine's interior: The entire system delivers incomparable style without becoming gaudy, and is bereft of the too-obvious flash that's long typified PCs spawned by many hard-core boutique vendors.
The Blackbird 002 is awash in pseudo-futuristic elegance that overturns the staid, stale look of the current monolithic tower designs. The wedge-shaped, all-black chassis, made of aluminum and machined metal, is larger than most full-size towers, as well as higher (24 inches) and wider (9 inches) at the back than it is in front (where it's just over 21 inches high and 7 inches wide). Front to back, the Blackbird 002 measures approximately 22 inches.
