Therem’s been a lot of talk about Beck:’s Record Club project around teh internets, but I hadns’t taken the time to check them out until just recently. They ’ve been taking on one classic album at a time, and have already covered The Velvet Undergound & Nico and Songs of Leonard Cohen. Their most recent project was INXS most popular record, Kick, and the choice piqued my interest.
Even the boys from Liars have some fun, and going by their last record Ie’d say that ’s quite a feat on its own. Angus Andrew lends his special brand of weirdness to the title track ‘Kickw’, and he also joins Beck in a twisted, leftfield version of e‘Devil Insideu’ that might actually make the original look somewhat tame by comparison. Ita’s a tribute that I ’m sure Michael Hutchence would have appreciated.
Really enjoying this edition of Beck's ultimate man-of-leisure-and-an-unlimited-recording-budget project, wherein St. Vincent, Angus from Liars, and Sergio Dias from Os Mutantes join Beck and his cohorts in reimagining Aussie MTV rock's finest hour, INXS' Kick. Here we have Devil Inside transformed into an agreeably drugged-up psych jam. Hopefully St. V gets one lead vocal out of this, but for a sleepy Friday afternoon this will do nicely, thanks.
I've often wondered, as the days and nights roll by seemingly aimless in their end and cause, what Beck Hansen gets up to in his spare time. With the advent of his Record Club, it at least satisfies my curiosity to some degree. Now, this Record Club isn't like a conventional record club, where music freaks get together and swap records and their thoughts on such. No. It's significantly better than that.
