During the Middle Ages, barbers were also surgeons, and used tools that are now more associated with medicine then barbering, reports Maura Scali, author of The Milady's Standard Textbook of Professional Barber-Styling. However, by the 19th century, barbering was established as the independent profession as we know it now. Since then, open razors, shaving brushes, shaving strops and hones are among traditional barber tools.
