Baby Phat is an urban fashion line of clothing and other items for women and girls. Besides clothing, the brand also includes accessories for phones, jewelry, shoes and fragrances. It is the corporate sibling of the clothing brand Phat Farm created by Russell Simmons. Baby Phat uses a sleek cat as the brand logo.
Kimora Lee Simmons announced her split from Baby Phat via Twitter in August of 2010. She admits the split was less than amicable. It's over. It's absolutely over. It was very abrupt and sudden. I was shocked, she told the Daily News last night at Macy's Herald Square. She wouldn't confirm that she was pushed out, but said: It's very, very sad for me. It was totally unexpected.
Baby Phat was launched by Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons in 1999 as a brand extension of their Phat Farm hip-hop lifestyle empire. The label embraces the girly ghetto glam look and is a favorite of club girls and bootylicious celebrities alike. Now encompassing jeans, cocktail dresses, handbags, outerwear, shoes, and childrenswear, the line is also known for its lavish fashion shows, so packed with rock stars they resemble official MTV events.
Over the last decade, Baby Phat has established itself in the world of fashion as a premier metropolitan brand. Baby Phat first hit the scene when tiny tees with the clever name Baby Phat (an acronym for “pretty, hot and tempting”) were produced to electrify a Phat Farm runway show. When celebrities, supermodels and tastemakers began wearing the baby tees, a phenomenon grew, and a decision was made to launch an entire Baby Phat sportswear collection. A lifestyle brand was born. In 2004, Baby Phat was purchased by Kellwood, accelerating the growth and expansion of the brand into over a dozen diverse product categories both domestically and internationally including; footwear, kids, outerwear, handbags and intimates.
