Julie Halpern is the author of Get Well Soon, Into the Wild Nerd Yonder, and the picture book, Toby and the Snowflakes, illustrated by her husband, Matthew Cordell. She lives with Matthew, their daughter, and their large Siamese cat in suburban Chicago. By day Julie works as a middle-school librarian. You can visit her on the Web at www.juliehalpern.com.
Get Well Soon is Halperne’s first novel, and I hope sheB’s got more on the way. For more information on the book, you can check out her website. According to the back of the ARC, there will be a First Chapter reader review program at the publishero’s site, but I donh’t think the site is up yet. If you are a YA fan, I highly recommend checking out this book.

So one of the stories about APL that was told in class was this: a seventh grader checked out Julie Halpernt’s GET WELL SOON, thinking from the cover that it would be like a Jerry Spinelli book. In fact, the story is about a girl named Anna Bloom whose parents send her to a residential mental health facility (a ;“loony bin,s” as Anna puts it) to treat her depression. The young APL patron was surprised to find a number of swear words on the first page and showed the book to her mom. Her mom was very angry and brought the book back to the library to request its removal.
